Gypsy is a song by Colombian singer Shakira. It was released as the fourth and final single (although it serves as the third single in each country) of her album She Wolf. "Gypsy" and "Gitana" were sent to radio stations around the world on 22 February 2010.[1][2][3] As done with previous singles from the album, there is a Spanish version, released mainly to Latin America and Spain, named "Gitana" (English: Gypsy). Due to "Gitana"'s absence from the album, it was announced that the album will be re-released in Latin America and Spain with "Gitana" included in the tracklisting.[4]

"Gyspy" received positive reviews from the critics. The song charted in a number of countries, and Spanish version "Gitana " topped in U.S Latin Radio Play and put her in first place for most number-ones among female artists[5] and also topped the Colombia charts and Mexican Single Charts. The Spanish version of "Gypsy" (Gitana) certified Platinum in Spain for selling 40,000 copies. It was performed numerous times and the two American performances took the form of a duet with American country music band Rascal Flatts.

Background

Shakira announced that Gypsy would be the next single from her album She Wolf, after meeting with the U.S. president Barack Obama.[6] About the song, she added : "(The song represents my) way of living and seeing life. I've been on the road since I was very young, so that's where the Gypsy metaphor comes from." [7] Also she said: "Gypsies are travelers of life, always absorbed in different cultures and learning from them".[8]

Composition

Gypsy was written by Shakira, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers and produced by Shakira, Amanda Ghost, Lukas Burton, Future Cut.[9] The song is an earthy twang of a simple banjo riff, Shakira trills about life on the road: "Friends and thoughts pass me by / Walking gets too boring / When you learn how to fly." With a hint of tribal clapping added to the chorus.[10] The song is an ingenious mix of mandolin, banjo, sitar and tabla.[11]

Versions

There are currently three versions released.[12] The Original Album Version which runs 3:18 seconds.[12][13] The Spanish version, 3:29, which follows the same instrumental arrangement as the "original album version" but is slightly extended, and the "Radio Edit", 3:29, which was produced by Freemasons.[12] The Video Version runs 3:37 and is a slightly reworked version of the "album version".[12][14]

Critical reception

Robert Copsey from Digital Spy gave positive review with 3 stars from 5 and said that "The track itself finds her stripping things back to the sound that first made her famous - it's by far the most organic-sounding offering from her She Wolf. [...] With a hint of tribal clapping added to the chorus, her transformation into the world's sexiest bohemian is complete. It's not as instantly infectious as some of her classic singles, but the addition of a thumping beat and a touch of spangle on the Freemasons mix vamps it up for the clubs nicely."[10]

Johnny Dee from Virgin Media said that "Gypsy proves Shakira can do the subtle subdued material too."[15] Shelz from Planetill said that "'Gypsy', a story about the nomadic existence of you guessed it... a Gypsy, has a folk overtone that is authenticated by what sounds like a banjo." [16] Ayala Ben-Yehuda from Billboard commented "Highlights include an ingenious mix of mandolin, banjo, sitar and tabla on 'Gypsy', the closest thing to an acoustic song on the album".[11]

Fraser McAlpine from BBC gave very positive review with 5 stars from 5 and said that "Anyway, accidental slurs aside, this is rather charming, isn't it? Sparkling mandolins, gently-strummed guitars and tabla drums in the verses, with the addition of snakey bowed instruments and castanets in the chorus. [...] But as it all hangs on Shakira's unique personality, charm and, yes, strange way with words, it just sort of magically works. It is, in fact, what I would describe as 'not boring'".[17]

Music video

The full music video for "Gypsy" premiered on MTV on 26 February 2010,[18] and the video stars tennis player Rafael Nadal[19] as Shakira's onscreen partner. The video features Shakira dancing, embracing and finally kissing the tennis champion. The video was directed by Jaume de Laiguana in Barcelona. There are two version of the video, one is "Gypsy" and second is "Gitana", which is actually the Spanish version of the song.[20][21] The video tops the Billboard's weekly list of Top 10 videos.[22]

Development

About the video, Shakira states that she chose Rafael Nadal because she identified with him. "Shooting this video with Rafa was a great experience, he is very sweet and made it easy and fun,” said Shakira. “He and I have so much in common -- starting out so young in our respective careers and traveling the world -- I felt this would translate the spirit of the lyrics in the song and I was thrilled he wanted to be a part of it." Nadal said it has been a great experience. “Shakira, as always, was spectacular. Working with a woman as charming as her, well, it makes it a lot easier to tell the truth. It was great, very easy, she’s really sweet and that always makes the hours go by faster."[20][23] Shakira mentioned, "I thought that maybe I needed someone I could in some way identify with. And Rafael Nadal is a person who has been totally committed to his career since he was very young, since he was 17, I believe." [6]

Reception

Nick Levine from Digital Spy gave a very positive review for the video, saying: "First she flaunted her glutes and groin in the 'She Wolf' video. Then she got all aggressive in the bedroom for 'Did It Again'. And now, in the promo clip for new single 'Gypsy', Shakira positions herself underneath the torso of six times Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. We've said it before and we'll say it again... is someone slipping something into her morning cup of Colombian Java?".[24]

Jocelyn Vena from MTV said that "The video, like the song paired with it, has a much more organic vibe and sound than other tracks from Shakira's 2009 album She Wolf.[...] It's an ideal setting for the romance between the smiling Shakira and her often-shirtless tennis pro to unfold. The video has lots of perspiration, quite a few shots of Shakira's gyrating hips and much affection shown by the pair."[25]

"Pip" from Entertainment Focus said that "It is unbelievable sexy - as you would expect from Shakira. 2009 was the year of the She Wolf, not only has the album gained commercial success, but it was released to incredible reviews."[26]

Billboard writes: Shakira might "steal your clothes and wear them, but all is forgiven with her new music video for 'Gypsy'", in which the Colombian firebird looks hotter than ever. Shakira braves the desert with (shirtless) tennis heartthrob Rafael Nadal and plays the harmonica, but we're pretty sure that's not what catches his eye".[22]

Live performances

Shakira performed Gypsy numerous times. On 29 September 2009 Shakira performed many of her tracks from her Latin-pop album She Wolf on the Later... with Jools Holland show, including "Gyspy" first time.[27][28] On 16 November 2009 Shakira performed "Gypsy" live on the ABC show The View.[29] On 17 November 2009 Shakira performed the song along with Santa Baby at Rockefeller Center.[30] On 24 November 2009 she also performed "Gypsy" on Rachael Ray show. This episode premiered first on Disney Latin America and Disney Brazil on 28 March, and Shakira made a special promo with her own voice in the Latin American version. Shakira sings a duet with the series star Selena Gomez.[38][39]

That same day, she performed it as a duet with Rascal Flatts on American Idol.[40] Shakira also performed Gypsy in Rock in Rio Lisboa and Madrid on May 21, 2010 and June 5, 2010.[41] Shakira also performed the song at the 2010 Premios Juventud Awards at the opening of the awards on July 15, 2010, along with her smash hit "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)".[42]
